(Los Angeles, CA)- L'Atelier Ldep Fine Art Photography Gallery in association with East 26 Projects is pleased to present Lev 'Lever' Rukhin's Low Fidelity. Following earlier work in his documentary series Drive-By Shootings, candid photographs of people inhabiting a real Los Angeles not depicted on TV, Lev's interest in the disregarded elements of a metropolis has grown. His new fascination is documenting the graffitied grievances, decals and imprecations affixed onto public property. After intensely photographing and cataloging many thousands of these 'defacements', Lev printed them out and cropped them into circles to resemble the decals themselves. Laid out, resonant patterns began to emerge. He saw a narrative, not only, in composition but more importantly in the collective voice of people-recognizing the strength of joined voices in a choir.
This is not exploitation. These whispers are a collective prayer. If 'high fidelity' is the conspicuous clarity of refined acoustics, this is Low Fidelity. These works are time sensitive, the message and art are the next-still passing ephemera-captured moments. A month goes by and yields new messages, points of view, intonations.
This experiment expanded into other cities: London, Rome, New York. An established sensibility transcends place.
